This deciduous shrub is best known for producing showy, long-lasting, pyramidal clusters of fragrant, white flowers up to a foot long. Flowering occurs on the previous year's growth. The large leaves are shaped somewhat like the leaves of red oak. The fall color can be orange, red and purple. This plant makes a striking specimen or border in the garden and is appropriate for a woodland. Butterflies and other insects visit the flowers. Birds eat the seeds. Deer will browse on the native hydrangeas.
