This is a deciduous shrub that produces some suckers. It does not spread aggressively. The growth habit is somewhat open and sprawling when young, developing a more upright, bushy habit with age. The greenish flowers are inconspicuous but they are followed by warty seed capsules that turn red with age. When mature, they open to show bright orange fruits. Birds and other small animals eat the fruits. If any deer are in the area, they will find and eat any leaves or twigs in reach. Protect young plants.
