This is a large deciduous tree that may be best suited for a large property. The large leaves are pinnately compound. According to some reports, it usually takes twenty years before the tree will produce a large crop of edible nuts. People, squirrels, some birds and other wildlife eat the seeds. Some references state that over one hundred species of caterpillars feed on the foliage of this tree. Black walnut wood has a high value. This tree is notorious for producing chemicals from its roots to inhibit the growth of some nearby plants. Deer may eat leaves and shoots that are in reach.
