This is a beautiful native, deciduous shrub. It may be trimmed into a dense shrub or limbed up to create a small tree. It has airy, drooping clusters of fragrant white flowers. Pollen-bearing and fruit-bearing flowers are produced on separate plants. One of each is required for fruit and seed production. The flowers are visited by a wide assortment of insect pollinators. Several sphinx moths use this plant as a caterpillar host. The fruits are eaten by a wide variety of birds and other small animals. The leaves turn yellow in fall. It is reported to have moderate deer resistance.
