This large deciduous tree has a distinctive four-lobed leaf. It gets its name from its large, attractive tulip-like flowers. It is easy to grow but this huge tree is better suited for large properties than small suburban yards. This plant is a larval host plant for eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, the Promethea moth and other moths. Beetles, flies and bees are the primary pollinators but butterflies and hummingbirds visit the flowers for nectar, too. Birds and other small animals eat the seeds. Generally, this tree is considered deer resistant but saplings may benefit from protection.
